A six percent increase in deaths on OPP patrolled roads in 2010 has led police to increase enforcement, especially on the "big three": aggressive driving, not using a seatbelt, and impaired driving. Traffic deaths decreased dramatically from 451 in 2007 to 310 in 2009. There have been 163 deaths on OPP patrolled roads, up from last year's 154 in the same period. So far July has been especially deadly with 46 deaths, compared to 28 for the entire month last year. OPP Commissioner, Julian Fantino says it could be a statistical aberration that will even out over the year, but OPP are going to crack down now anyway to decrease the number of traffic-related deaths.
